Charlotte's Story

Charlotte’s music career is picking up tempo thanks to the opportunities she had during her time at Wells Cathedral School.

Originally from Jersey, bursary recipient Charlotte, Class of 2020, looked further afield when she outgrew the local music scene. A talented musician, it was ‘a massive leap’ deciding to move away from home. Wells was the perfect fit for her and a bursary made it possible.

“I was asking a lot from my parents to support me financially and emotionally, to go to boarding school, and to do loads of this exciting music stuff.”

Two teachers in particular struck a chord, Ed Leaker and Andy Tweed. Their support and expertise was invaluable and she describes them as her angels. As a saxophonist, Charlotte applied to six conservatoires receiving offers from five. Now completing her course at Guildhall School of Music and Drama she’s at the beginning of a promising career in music.

“Musically, my absolute favourite memory of Wells Cathedral School was the woodwind promenade concert. I got to play from the organ loft in the cathedral. It was the most sensational thing.”

Charlotte plays in a saxophone quartet and in May she played at two music festivals, Land Beyond and Great Escape, alongside pop artist Peonie. In the future, she hopes to get into teaching the next generation of musicians.

“Financial support was the only way I could have got to Wells. So that was the entire world to me. If I hadn't had that, I don't know where I'd be now.”

Thank you for supporting pupils like Charlotte.
