An introduction from the Head Master
Education is the gift that lasts a lifetime. A good education provides the foundation for the rest of your life. It is my very strong belief that the very special education we offer here at Wells Cathedral School should be available to any child who will thrive here in a way they could not elsewhere, including those whose families may not have the financial resources to afford the fees.
That’s why we are launching our Play Your Part campaign in support of bursaries, and I hope you’ll want to get behind it.
Our mission is simple: to make it possible for more children who could flourish at Wells to come to school here.
Wells Cathedral School has a very long history, established by royal decree to educate the Choristers from the neighbouring Cathedral in 909AD. Over the intervening 1,115 years the School has evolved into the only educational institution in the UK that combines a Specialist Music School with a brilliant all-round education - while still being the place where Wells Cathedral Choristers come to school.
In spite of our rich history, Wells Cathedral School itself is not wealthy. Our richness lies in our diversity - which is where bursaries have and will continue to play a significant part in the future of our School.
The evolution of our School, from a mediaeval school for Choristers to more recent history as a Grammar School for boys and now a Specialist Music School, has been enabled largely thanks to the kindness and generosity of our Wellensian community. Previous donations and legacies have shaped the fabric of our School.
Today we encourage every member of our community to play their part in opening the door to Wells for a new generation of children through bursaries.
Changing lives through bursaries: Our mission
Wells Cathedral School has always been an inclusive place to live and learn, providing skills that enable young people to grow their talents and fulfil their potential. For many years, the School’s means-tested bursary programme, funded in part by the generosity of the Wellensian community, has enabled children from all backgrounds to study at Wells.
Supporting Children
We work in partnership with parents but the pot we have available to fund bursaries is not enough to help all the children who need financial support to achieve their potential in our School. With your help, we can make sure no child turns down a place at Wells because of their family’s circumstances.
We need your help now more than ever to help provide significant bursaries. We aim to double the number of 50%+ bursaries we award by 2028. To achieve this, we need to raise an additional £500,000 each year.
How can I play my part?
Set up a regular gift
The Quilter Fund was set up in memory of former Head Master Alan Quilter. We welcome donations of any amount, and a regular monthly gift helps us plan bursary commitments over the years.
Sponsor a pupil
Please get in touch with the Development Team to discuss opportunities around sponsorship and what it means for you and the young person you’ll be supporting.
