In September, at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term, the School welcomed Robert Powell (OW 1981) as the new Chair of Governors. Robert has strong links with Wells and we congratulate him on his appointment.
Robert says,
I was a pupil from 1970-1981, a parent of pupils from 2002 -2015 and have been a Governor since 2016, latterly Chair of the Development Committee. My love of WCS runs deep, and I feel honoured to have been called to serve our exceptional school in this new role.
I am sure you will wish to join me in thanking David Brown for his leadership, dedication and wisdom over the last four years. The School remains a special place for both him and his family and I am grateful that David will continue to serve on the Foundation.
At a time of great change and challenge for education and for the independent sector particularly, my fellow Governors and I know that there is much to achieve in the coming months to ensure the School continues to thrive and excel. Like David before me, I am committed to ensuring the ethos and vision of our wonderful School remains - namely that we continue to provide a first-rate academic and all-round education for all our pupils, alongside our specialist programmes. To that end, I am delighted that our GCSE and A Level pupils have secured such impressive exam results in the last few days; just under half of our GCSE grades were 9-7, nearly a third of pupils achieved grades 9-8, and with over 94% of pupils securing a grade 4 or above, they have significantly outperformed the national average of 67.4% - all of which is hugely impressive and all the more so given our non-academically selective nature as a School up until this stage. Meanwhile, 86% of our departing Upper Sixth secured places at their first or insurance choices for tertiary education, with over a third of their grades at A*-A. I am so proud of what our amazing pupils have been able to achieve, supported, of course, by our wonderful staff and you as parents.

I look forward to working with you all to ensure that our School’s reputation for excellence in all fields is maintained, so that we can continue to ensure that we are together helping to nurture and educate the well rounded, balanced and high-achieving young people of whom we are all so proud.
