Two parties of French children from Wells twin town Paray-le-Monial visited Wells last week as guests of Wells Cathedral School.
The first party of 53 children was accompanied by five staff. They arrived in the city on Monday last and left on the Wednesday. They were led by the deputy head of the Institution Jeanne D’Arc, Michel Targe, who had visited the city earlier this year with a party of councillors from Paray-le-Monial.
The second party arrived on Friday last and left on Sunday and, led by Jaqueline Grelin, included the headmistress of the senior school Madame Bouvarel.
Arrangements for the visits were made between the Head of Modern Languages at the Cathedral School, Mr. Graham Crocker and Monsieur Targe, when they met in February.
Originally arrangements had been made for just one coach party to visit Wells, but there was so much interest on behalf of the school to come to Wells that another party had to be laid on.
The visitors were hosted by parents of pupils at the Cathedral School, although some stayed in the Cathedral School boarding houses. The pupils were aged between 11 and 18.
They were taken to see Wookey Hole, Cheddar, Bath and Glastonbury Abbey as well as places in Wells, including the Market Place on market day.
Staff accompanying both parties were entertained to sherry in the Headmaster's study.
Mr. Crocker is trying to get a party together to return the visit after Easter, when some local traders and businessmen will be going to a trade fair to be held at Paray le Monial.
