What we do

Official role

The Parents’ Association (PA)’s role is to enrich the calendar and pupil experience by planning and delivering activities that result in further opportunities for education and connection between the school and its community.

What this means the PA does each year:

We organise a programme of events for the pupils and parents at WCS, many of which form much loved parts of the school calendar. These raise funds for the school and include large events such as an annual jazz picnic on the lawn, a firework display in the grounds, and the annual ball for parents and sixth form leavers. In the last year, we’ve also put on bingo and quiz nights, and a Christmas craft event.

Our team, along with our brilliant volunteers, runs the second-hand uniform sale, where we buy and sell uniform items twice a year. Many parents look forward to these sales, not only as an opportunity to find good quality uniform at a fraction of the price of new items, but also to catch up with existing friends and make new ones.

We also provide support to the school’s teachers, houses, pupils and departments, who can apply to the PA for financial backing for enrichment projects or new equipment. The PA Committee members review each bid and our votes decide to whom the finances are allocated. In a typical year the Committee holds three bid meetings and gives away approximately £25,000 a year.

We are your PA

The PA team includes mums and dads from across the whole school, reception to upper sixth, to make sure the interests of your family are represented. We're a registered charity, of which you are already a part, as your school fees include your membership.

We're elected every year, each member application needs to be supported by two other Wells parents, and our Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary are elected by the committee itself.

We meet with the heads of both senior and junior school, and other representatives, six times a year, to ensure we have formal opportunity to feed back ideas and concerns from the wider parent community. Our chair also meets with Alastair Tighe regularly to discuss particular issues and follow up on items raised at Committee meetings.

What can you count on us for?

We love questions! If you’re new to the school and would like to meet your community, contact us and we can point you in the right direction. You can also count on us to take your feedback on board, so, if you think there’s things we could do differently, let us know. We’re here to listen to you and try to help, and that includes listening to your kids. If they have a brilliant plan for a funding bid, or for an event, we like those ideas best of all!

We’re always keen to hear what events and fundraising ideas you or your children might have, so get in touch. At the moment, events are a different shape because of the pandemic, but many are still happening, and you can rely on us to make sure they are as entertaining and memorable as possible.

Want to join us?

We would love that! Not only is it a great way to connect with other parents at school, but being on the PA is a volunteering role with which you get to see and feel the benefits your children and their WCS community is getting. It’s very rewarding, we don’t demand huge time commitments and we give plenty of notice for events. We are particularly looking for people who have a sense of humour and are committed to helping the WCS community flourish.

If you don’t feel the time is right to join the Committee, but you are keen to be involved in some way, please consider adding your name to our volunteer list, whether this would be to offer general help at our events throughout the school year or to help with a specific event. The latter is a really good way to get a taste of what’s involved. Running events are made so much easier with a large, enthusiastic team and many hilarious memories have been made and are treasured by the teams who have volunteered for balls, jazz picnics and fireworks nights.
